3> Key takeaways
- Articulation reveals effort and knowledge.
- Recognition favors the articulate.
- Strong articulation in your mother tongue builds articulation in other languages.
- Articulation can be practised, not just inherited.
- Introverts and extroverts can be equally articulate.
4> Discussion questions:
- Can you share an example when you had put in a lot of effort, but failed to show the value of your work because you couldn’t articulate it clearly: I once had difficulty in my work when presenting the work I had done to my boss. I work in technology and my boss is non-tech, but when I explained the problem, I explained it in a way that only people who know how to code could understand. My supervisor reminded me when I explained it to my boss like that.
- Have you ever experienced a situation where someone with ideas similar to yours received more recognition because they were more articulate in explaining them? Elaborate it.: Actually, I have never experienced that at work, but when I was in school, I did not dare to express my opinion because I was afraid of being judged or rejected, but another friend dared to speak up and that opinion was recognized and I felt quite regretful.
5> Debate topics:
- “If we cannot be articulate in our mother tongue (Vietnamese), we cannot be articulate in a foreign language (English).”: I agree with this opinion. Because what I am saying is not only that you know how to speak that language but also that you have ideas, knowledge, and know how to present them in a way that is easy to understand and coherent. If you are bad at English but good at speaking, I think you will not be fluent, but if you are not clear in your mother tongue, then speaking English will certainly not help you improve your speaking because you are also fluent in your mother tongue.
- “Being articulate is more of an innate ability than a skill that can be practiced and improved.”: I think we can improve. We have a lot of videos/documents online, books and courses to improve this problem.
- “Extroverts have a natural advantage in being articulate compared to introverts.”: That’s how other people divide people into 2 types but I don’t think anyone is completely introverted or 100% extroverted. Extroverts may prefer to communicate for recharging but there is no such thing as extroverts having an innate advantage in communication.
